In May 2026, the Victorian Auditor-General's Office (VAGO) released a discussion paper, Strengthening Audit Independence, outlining reforms to strengthen the independence of the Victorian Auditor-General and VAGO.
Victoria's framework has not been reviewed in a decade and no longer aligns with contemporary expectations for independence, transparency and resilience.
The paper makes 24 recommendation across 9 reform areas, with 2 priorities: enforceable access to audit information and greater financial, managerial and administrative autonomy.
Read the discussion paper to learn more about why a stronger, more independent audit framework matters for Parliament, public accountability and trust. If you have any questions, please visit the VAGO website
